Antoon van Dyck

Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) was a Flemish painter from Antwerp and Rubens's most famous pupil and assistant. After six years in Italy, mostly in Genoa, he became court painter to Charles I of England in 1632. His elegant portraits of the king, the queen and the English nobility shaped the English portrait for more than a century. He also painted religious and mythological scenes. He died in London at forty-two and was buried in Old St Paul's Cathedral.
