Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was a Danish-French painter born on the island of St Thomas in the Caribbean. He was the only artist to take part in all eight Impressionist exhibitions and was a father figure to younger painters such as Cézanne and Gauguin. He mainly painted the countryside around Pontoise and Éragny, with peasants and orchards, and in the late 1880s experimented with Seurat's pointillism. In his last years he painted series of Parisian boulevards and harbours from hotel windows.
