Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) was a German painter and the leading landscape painter of German Romanticism. He was born in Greifswald on the Baltic, studied in Copenhagen and lived in Dresden from 1798. His landscapes with figures seen from behind, ruins, mountains and coasts, such as The Monk by the Sea, Wanderer above the Sea of Fog and Chalk Cliffs on Rügen, are about nature, faith and transience. After his death he was forgotten until his rediscovery around 1900.
