Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French painter, draughtsman and sculptor. He had a classical training and admired Ingres, but exhibited with the Impressionists and, like them, painted modern Paris. His favourite subjects were ballet dancers, horse races, cafés, laundresses and women bathing, often seen from an unexpected angle. He worked a great deal in pastel and made monotypes. His wax sculptures, including The Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer, were cast in bronze after his death.
