John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was an American painter who was born in Florence and lived in Europe all his life, mainly in Paris and London. He became the best-known portrait painter of his time; the scandal around Madame X (1884) led him to move to London. After 1900 he painted fewer and fewer portraits, made hundreds of watercolours on his travels, and painted large murals for the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1918, as a war artist, he painted Gassed.
