Pieter Bruegel

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525-1569) was a Netherlandish painter and draughtsman, active in Antwerp and from 1563 in Brussels. He travelled to Italy, drawing the Alps on the way, and first made designs for prints in the manner of Hieronymus Bosch. His paintings of peasant life, such as The Peasant Wedding and Hunters in the Snow, and his crowded scenes such as Netherlandish Proverbs and Children's Games are world famous. Only about forty of his paintings survive; twelve hang in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. His sons Pieter the Younger and Jan also became painters.
